Abstract
We have investigated to identify T lymphocyte subsets and B lymphocytes in-filtrating adjacent to the adenocarcinoma of the stomach using the avidin-biotin immunoperoxidase method with monoclonal antibodies to lymphocyte subsets and direct immunofluorescence method to B lymphocytes in paraffin embedded tissue sections. Both T cells and B cells are found in the infiltrates but T cells predominated. The ratio of helper/inducer T cells to suPPressor/cytotoxic T cells is relatively decreased and this revealed suppressor/cytotoxic T cells are increased relative to helper/inducer T cells. Pan T lymphocytes comprised the range of 50 to 90% of the lymphocytes infiltrating adjacent to the adenocarcinoma of the stomach and fourteen out of twenty-five cases anti-HLA-DR positive lymphocytes comprised under had above 70% of the lymphocytes. In fourteen out of twenty-five cases anti-HLA-DR positive lymphocytes comprised under 30% of the lymphocytes, and anti-IgG positive lymphocytes comprised under 30% of the lymphocytes in the thirteen of twenty-five cases. Fourteen out of twenty-five cases were under the ratio of 1.5 of helper/inducer T lymphocytes to suppressoricytotoxic T lymphocytes.
